Effect of pruning-derived biochar on heavy metals removal and water dynamics

2014

Biomass-derived biochar is considered as a promising heavy metal adsorbent, due to abundance of polar functional groups, such as carboxylic, hydroxyl, and amino groups, which are available for heavy metal removal. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of an orchard pruning-derived biochar in removing some heavy metals (through the evaluation of isotherms) and to study water dynamics at the solid-liquid interface as affected by heavy metal adsorption (through an innovative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach). Both isotherms and NMR spectra revealed that Pb and Cr showed a good affinity for the biochar surface (Pb > Cr), while Cu was less affine. Accordi…

Global Coastal Permeability database (GCPdb)

2023

The Global Coastal Permeability Database contains both the input and output data of the Global Coastal Permeability Model developed by Tschaikowski et al. (2023) and available at DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.7845568. The model is implemented in R and calculates the coastal permeability for each shoreline segment of the global shoreline vector created by Sayre et al. (2019) with a 30-meter resolution and covering a spatial extent of 180.0°W to 180.0°E longitude and 60.8°S to 83.7°N latitude. The coastline is separated into three sections (A: coastal aquifer section, B: shoreline section, C: shallow section), and permeability values and ranges are provided for each section. Permeability values were de…

Mechanisms of Water Interaction with Pore Systems of Hydrochar and Pyrochar from Poplar Forestry Waste

2014

The aim of this study was to understand the water-surface interactions of two chars obtained by gasification (pyrochar) and hydrothermal carbonization (hydrochar) of a poplar biomass. The two samples revealed different chemical compositions as evidenced by solid state (13)C NMR spectroscopy. In fact, hydrochar resulted in a lignin-like material still containing oxygenated functionalities. Pyrochar was a polyaromatic system in which no heteronuclei were detected. After saturation with water, hydrochar and pyrochar were analyzed by fast field cycling (FFC) NMR relaxometry. Results showed that water movement in hydrochar was mainly confined in very small pores. Conversely, water movement in py…

Anomalous water dynamics in brain: a combined diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and neutron scattering investigation

2019

International audience; Water diffusion is an optimal tool for investigating the architecture of brain tissue on which modern medical diagnostic imaging techniques rely. However, intrinsic tissue heterogeneity causes systematic deviations from pure free-water diffusion behaviour. To date, numerous theoretical and empirical approaches have been proposed to explain the non-Gaussian profile of this process. The aim of this work is to shed light on the physics piloting water diffusion in brain tissue at the micrometre-to-atomic scale. Combined diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and first pioneering neutron scattering experiments on bovine brain tissue have been performed in order to probe dif…

Water Dynamics at the Solid-Liquid Interface to Unveil the Textural Features of Synthetic Nanosponges.

2020

A Fast-Field-Cycling NMR investigation was carried out on a set of polyurethane cyclodextrin nanosponges, in order to gain information on their textural properties, which have been proven to be quite difficult to assess by means of ordinary porosimetric techniques. Experiments were performed on both dry and wet samples, in order to evaluate the behavior of the “non-exchangeable” C-bound 1H nuclei, as well as the one of the mobile protons belonging to the skeletal hydroxyl groups and the water molecules. The results acquired for the wet samples accounted for the molecular mobility of water molecules within the channels of the nanosponge network, leading back to the possible pore size distrib…

Water Dynamics in Neural Tissue

2013

Water dynamics in post-mortem two-years old bovine cerebral right hemisphere has been investigated through Elastic and Quasi-elastic Neutron Scattering. Experimental parameters such as stability in time of the proton dynamics, data reproducibility and changes in the tissues dynamics upon the conservation protocol, cryogenic towards formalin addition, have been carefully investigated. Results are extremely encouraging and comparisons to magnetic resonance imaging findings are discussed.

In Situ X-Ray Tomography Imaging of Soil Water and Cyanobacteria From Biological Soil Crusts Undergoing Desiccation

2018

Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) are millimeter-sized microbial communities developing on the topsoils of arid lands that cover some 12% of Earth’s continental area. Biocrusts consist of an assemblage of mineral soil particles consolidated into a crust by microbial organic polymeric substances that are mainly produced by the filamentous bundle-forming cyanobacteria, among which Microcoleus vaginatus is perhaps the most widespread. This cyanobacterium is the primary producer for, and main architect of biocrusts in many arid soils, sustaining the development of a diverse microbial community. Biocrusts are only active when wet, and spend most of their time in a state of desiccated quiescence…

Brain lateralization probed by water diffusion at the atomic to micrometric scale

2019

International audience; Combined neutron scattering and diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have been used to reveal significant interregional asymmetries (lateralization) in bovine brain hemispheres in terms of myelin arrangement and water dynamics at micron to atomic scales. Thicker myelin sheaths were found in the left hemisphere using neutron diffraction. 4.7 T dMRI and quasi-elastic neutron experiments highlighted significant differences in the properties of water dynamics in the two hemispheres. The results were interpreted in terms of hemisphere-dependent cellular composition (number of neurons, cell distribution, etc.) as well as specificity of neurological functions (s…

Etude de la variabilité des propriétés physiques et hydrodynamiques d'un sol argileux sous l'effet de conduites en protection intégrée contre les adv…

2015

Integrated weed management (IWM)-based cropping systems are of great interest due to their significant reduction of herbicide inputs by using a complex combination of agricultural techniques. The main objective of our work was to contribute to the environmental dimension of the multi-criteria evaluation of IWM-based cropping systems which were set up since 2000 on the experimental domain of the National Institute for Agronomical Research (INRA) to Bretenière (France). The variability of physical and hydrodynamic soil properties involved in the transfer of water through the vadose zone was studied for the 5 cropping systems present on the experimental site (1 reference cropping system and 4 …
